Yogurt: The healthy food turned to junk!

Here are some shocking things that can be found in yogurt:

 

HFCS-90 – this is high fructose corn syrup that contains 90% fructose instead of 55%.  Excessive fructose leads to obesity and heart disease.  HFCS-90 is derived from corn starch, which is likely GMO.  Yes, fructose does come from fruit and that is what companies want you to think of it as.  However, you can see by this ingredient just how misleading it can be.

Synthetic Pesticides – Yogurts that contain fruit likely contain synthetic pesticide residues unless they are organic. Berries are the most popular fruits found in yogurts, and they are also on the EWG’s Dirty Dozen List of the most contaminated produce.

Neosugar – Say what?  It can also be called Nutraflora or Fructan.  These are highly processed forms of sugar so the body can’t digest it. Yikes!

Dimethylpolysiloxane – I mentioned this chemical ingredient used as a defoamer in oil fryers for French fries.  It’s also in silly putty, is preserved with formaldehyde, and it can also be used in the processing of yogurt.  One more reason to make it at home!

Nanoparticles – Did you know that microscopic particles of titanium dioxide (nanoparticles) can be used as an artificial color in food like yogurt? Titanium dioxide is linked to inflammation of the gut!  Mercy!

How do you pick out a better-quality yogurt?

  1. Look for real food ingredients (Can’t pronounce it, put it back!)
  2. Look for organic and 100% grass-fed
  3. Steer clear of artificial anything (Artificial sweeteners can kill good bacteria)
  4. Buy plain and flavor it at home
  5. Look for Live Active Cultures such as S. thermophilus, L. acidophilus, B. lactis, and lactobacillus bulgaricus. The more the better!
  6. Skip the fruit yogurt and add it at home. Some fruit-flavored yogurts don’t contain real fruit, just fake flavor to tease your taste buds.  These especially target children
  7. Organic yogurt contains more beneficial fats such as CLA.
